Merstham House, Merstham
A total of 6 images. Currently displaying images 1 to 6.
1 merstham.photos image number 2999
An aerial photo of Merstham House, the seat of the Jolliffe family (Lord Hylton) until 1899.
It was let until the 2nd World War, when it was occupied by the Canadian forces.
It was pulled down in the 1950s and the M25 was built through the grounds in the late 1970s.
Gatton Bottom can be seen curving along the top of the picture below the dovecote which still stands
(following repairs in 1991). The old Rectory is mainly hidden behind the trees to the right.
With thanks to Alex Hunter, author of "20th Century Merstham", which is available from the Ancient House Bookshop, Reigate.

Can you please confirm that Merstham House was demolished in 1934?

I was evacuated age 4 to Merstham and lived in Merstham House from September 1939 ~ summer 1940. My older sister has died and we lived there with June and Francis. Does anyone else remember this period?

This is an aerial picture from 1982 of the site of Merstham House looking East along Gatton Bottom to its junction with the A23 below St Katharine's - the house stood where the trees now stand between the lane and the motorway on the right of the picture.

Just off the photogragh, top right, where the A23 crosses the M25, there used to be a large pond where we used to fish for frogs spawn.

Living whilst in Surrey. 1921.
Exceedingly picturesque was a Pageant of Living Whilst held in the grounds of Merstham House, Merstham, in aid of the funds for the Royal Waterloo Hospital, London. The "cards" are seen grouped before the Treasurer of the hospital (left), who is proposing a vote of thanks to Mrs Andrew Walker for lending her the grounds.
